Great ways to show your employees you appreciate them

Employers that take the time to express appreciation for employee contributions are typically respected for their efforts. When a manager or business owner makes it a priority to express gratitude to their employees, it'll usually carry significant meaning to people working for the organization.
Not to mention there are many terrific reasons for business owners, or managers, to invest in efforts to show employee appreciation. Doing so can increase overall organizational morale, create a happier environment and, ultimately, grow productivity and profitability. Not to mention, a loyal team (and in today's job-hopping environment, it's not a bad goal to aim for since you don't want to lose your top talent).

Employers that want to nurture a dynamic work environment and grow a team of great employees can strengthen this goal by creating a motivational and pleasant work atmosphere that shows them how much they are appreciated.

Monetary rewards

Employees often appreciate receiving financial rewards for their efforts. Monetary rewards could come in many ways. For instance, a raise, cash bonus, or gift cards. The amounts do not have to be large, especially if the organization has limited abilities in their budget. But any gesture, no matter how small, is still a nice expression of gratitude.

Expressions of appreciation

If monetary rewards are not feasible due to economic hardship or organizational budgetary constraints beyond a manager's control, there are many other tokens employers can offer. Team leaders can offer award certificates, plaques, or verbal recognition in front of a group or give another type of public acknowledgment. Studies show gratitude definitely matters.

Employees simply appreciate being acknowledged for their hard work, and the best way to show this is to thank them for their efforts. Unfortunately, managers often get caught up in the day-to-day tasks and do not take the time to thank those who ensure the work gets done. Not acknowledging hard work can have a significant impact on morale whereas a simple "thank you" can go a long way and mean so much to an employee. It doesn't take much time or effort, so no reason not to!

Offer unexpected time off

Employees who work hard would likely feel a nice boost in morale when bosses give them some extra time off as a thank you for their hard work and efforts. Time off can come in the form of:
  • Extra vacation days
  • A single day off
  • A late start,
  • An early release on a Friday to extend the weekend
  • A longer lunch hour or two.
Giving bonus time off as a nod of appreciation is a great way to show employees they are appreciated and valued.

Breakfast or luncheon

A gathering of the team for a breakfast or luncheon is another way to show employees how much they are appreciated. Managers can plan an event that can take place on or off the premises to show staff appreciation for their loyalty, dedication and hard work.

Additionally, another benefit to planning an appreciation get-together is a nice way to gather everyone together in a social environment to mingle, a stark contrast to everyday work interaction. A team that gets to know one another on a personal level, away from the pressures of the workday, may become more cohesive.

Employee appreciation days

A spin-off of a breakfast/luncheon, employers wanting to go the extra mile to express appreciation can hold an employee appreciation day. This is a designated day where the workplace shuts down (where feasible) and everyone gets a paid day off to join in on a celebration. Bosses can plan food, games, certificates, raffles, prizes, gifts and, perhaps, even an award ceremony. It’s also a great way to have staff members interact in a low-pressure and fun way. As a side bonus for the employer, this could help develop and/or strengthen working relationships.

Organizational announcements

An announcement of appreciation through a mass email, routine newsletter or other methods of communication that is shared through the company. When bosses want to acknowledge a special job an employee(s) has done, met a metric, or completed a goal for the business, they can highlight these accomplishments in announcements across the agency.

Unfortunately, some businesses ignore the value of their employees, and this can have a negative effect on the company as a whole, both employer and employee. However, those that do take the time to express appreciation for their employees and recognize the important role they play, often tend to experience continued growth and success.

After all, it is the employees who are the people ensuring the operational aspects of the business and day-to-day needs flow smoothly. Without a dedicated team, a company will flounder. Employers who recognize this and show their employees how important they are can enjoy the natural benefits that accompany a happy, dedicated and loyal staff.
